Thanks heaps! Tell you what, I'm still struggling to match the original images lightning balance. I keep making my sketches too light?! They look OK but I can't kick this bad habit. It's my Everest

They are very light and definitely makes them uniquely "yours" how high up the "B" scale are you going with your pencils? I get up to about a 6B max which gives me nice darks. Hell, many people don't even know pencils come that dark so don't be afraid to research.

I suppose it is my style as I keep doing it. I do have up to 8b but I really only use 6b max. Got the tools but I can't seem to use them correctly thus far

When you lay down some foundation shading, do you keep it light then layer them as you progress?

Right! I put down a mid tone 2B works perfect for this. Then ill go to the eyes..(doing portraits i have to start with the eyes because if they are not right it goes in the trash.) then i move to the darkest areas and let those determine my other values. Check out my WIP on the "Selfish" drawing to see what i mean.
